Analysis paragraph rough draft example4/23/2024 However, since these organizations have existed, formal and informal, so has the practice of hazing (Finkel 228-232). If all best intentions are met, Greek life and fraternities in general are good for members and universities and their respective images. Upholding a fraternity for decades, projects an image of dependability, social consciousness, and ambition onto American youth and involved and alumni, with some fraternities stretching their deeply rooted reach far enough to foster influence in politics and other arenas, where tradition may benefit affiliated students and graduates through advantages in their professional careers by association. Greek organizations, specifically fraternities, to my knowledge and understanding of the perspectives of my peers and the general populous, are synonymous with legacy beacons of pride manifested in the brotherly spirit of advancement on which America thrives. This acknowledgement of alternate perspectives and understanding of possible counterargument are elements of ethos which eliminate any shreds of bias from the piece, actually giving more validity to Finkel’s claims instead of refuting them, despite their contradiction to the claims of the piece as a whole. Finkel, MD, author of the study entitled Traumatic Injuries Caused by Hazing Practices, a piece which solidly validates the call for action against hazing, depicts the other upshot to the presence of Greek organizations on campus, upholding tradition, with simple historical fact in the opening of her article. At my own alma mater, DePaul University, fraternities and sororities are good examples of what the Greek system can do for campus life, incorporating many members into the various organizations’ missions of philanthropy and fun. Greek life at its best carries out its intention of promoting camaraderie and activism in the community, while giving students a small group of peers to depend on, relate to, and to socialize with. I recognize and appreciate the positive values that can be instilled in the young minds of the pledges and members of fraternities and sororities.
